#1 What health issues you are most concerned about?

For me my health issues are high cholesterol.  Heart disease and high blood pressure runs in the family.  I alway worry, am I eating right, do I get enough exercise is my blood thick.  I have a tendency to eat too much fried food and drinking water, forget about it.  I confused on what to eat and how I can lower it naturally.  I gave up Red meat, white sugar and bread so we will see what changes in the  months to come.

I Interview a few of my friends about their health concerns and this is the results I got:

My Girlfriend Tomika is concerned about weight gain.  She had a baby a year ago and gained 60 pounds. That is a lot of weight but I assured her that with a steady diet of healthy foods and exercise with cardio 4 days a week she could lose the weight before the end of 2010.  We both have a habit of eating too may sweets and hi carb foods. She expressed how hard it is to lose weight and keep it off.  Tomika has tried diet pills, shakes, fasting and jenny craig.

My Neighbor, Gail is concerned about cancer.  She is convinced that the water, the food and our homes are covered with things that cause cancer.  I asked if she had cancer in her family and she told me her cousin from California has Breast cancer that is in remission.  Gail has not started her yearly Mammograms yet so I'm not sure if she has a valid reason to worry.

  1. Desi,

I enjoyed reading both of your blogs. I hope next week will be a better week for you! :) In regards to your worries about your health I too worry about my cholesterol. It is not high enough yet to take medication but the doctor tells me I need to continut to come in for check-ups to stay on top of it. One thing that has helped me alot if to give up dairy items. Instead of yogurt in the morning I eat Oatmeal. No more cheese burgers or cheese quesadillas either! You said you are confused about what to eat so I was wondering if you go to the doctor, if so you can ask them and they should be able to give you some pointers.

It sounds like your girlfriend has her work cut out for her to lose her baby weight. I am sure it will come off since she will be more active since having the baby. I thought it was nice that you were giving her so many tips and thought to myself, I wonder how many other people would rather help their friends out than do what they need to do to be healthy themselves!? Also, your neighbor Gail might have a point about everything being covered with things that cause cancer. I wonder if we will discuss some of that in our readings. I wonder if we die from things now that we didn't die from before because we have a more developed world or is it just because we didn't live long enough in the past to experience things like cancer.

Your blog listed great points and I am eager to continue reading throughout the semester. Take it easy on the meat and dairy, I will be doing the same! Gotta keep our cholesterol down.

  2. You have definitely started in the right direction. Eating right is the best start and you have started to eliminate some of the things that did not help too much. I also try, but eating healthy and exercise is a lifestyle change and it IS difficult. Baby fat is a bit more difficult to get rid off and I can imagine exercise is a bit difficult for your girlfriend with a new baby. However, there are several exercises that does not require a gym and she can use her baby to exercise (walks in the park, playing with the baby up and down in controlled movements for biceps, etc.). Please discourage her from fad diets and diet pills. If you lose it quick you will gain it quick.

Gail may not be too wrong about cancer. Despite all these years, a cure for cancer is not in the near horizon. However, I do work in a cancer hospital and it is one of many diseases that touches all ethnicities and genders. At first, I also thought that because there are so many pesticides used in our foods, asbestos, and other carcinogen materials in the US that it was the reason there was so much cancer in the US but it is universal. We see a large number of patients from Saudi Arabia, China, and every single continent. Therefore, I just pray that with all the funds available for research that one day, a cure is definitely found.
